Speechwriting

Most speeches written in Ireland are written by people in the Civil Service. And they operate under fierce pressure. First they’re under pressure to pack in every positive piece of data they can into every speech. Second they live under the constant threat of ‘the line’. ‘The line’ is the thing a speech goes up to get covered in red pen, before returning battle-weary and wounded to the writer. Lastly they rarely get to sit down with the person they’re writing for so they end up writing in a partial vacuum.

And on top of all that they tend to have the same problems most speechwriters have; they’re self-taught and self-developed.

For them (and for anyone else who has to write speeches) we offer a two-day intensive programme.

And we guarantee it’s guff-free. Speechwriters don’t need theory, they need practical help. That’s what we give. Our course shows speechwriters how to identify speech-patterns and references used by their speaker. It teaches them how to develop themes and put coherent structure on their speeches. It teaches them how to interweave illustration, metaphor and allegory around data to make it relevant, fresh and captivating.

Most of all it teaches the delicate skill of writing for the spoken word. That’s not as easy as it sounds. Sentence structure and length differ in the written and spoken word, ideas and themes develop differently and grammar and syntax change radically. Even things that matter little in print (like sibilance, alliteration, and onomatopoeia) become important in the spoken word.

Why hire us to train you. Well, we think we’re great. (Click here if you want to see why).
